About Sam Joseph
Sam Joseph is a self-taught composer, something that allows him absolute freedom with his music. Sam has been creating piano music since the age of four and he still greatly enjoys the feeling of freedom that results when creating music without constraints. Taking piano lessons against his will as a child, and later rebelling against his piano teacher by hiding in her garden, aged ten, he hasn't looked back. And that would have been it, had Sam not started playing the piano some fifteen years later and began what he explains as,
"An inward journey. A time in my life when I felt really balanced and at one; Really connected. And then I got the urge to start playing the piano again. I began a process I now call 'channelling' - or 'receiving' my music, and I had no idea where it came from. I thought to myself, 'I've had no real training, so where's all this music coming from? Where's this ability been hiding?' I think about Sparky's Magic Piano quite often, because here I am writing piano music and I am not a trained pianist; maybe there's some hidden talent. It has since dawned on me, that I am tapping in to my 'higher-self' - that special part of everyone that I believe is linked to a higher plane."
When Sam qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist in 2004,
his work with the relaxation side of his music began to blossom.
Inspired by human emotion and the natural world, Sam's music is
thought to be engaging and powerful in a new way. Sam suggests
that his music can be listened to 'on the go' and so differs
from conventional relaxation music.
"I began to understand how to affect my unconscious mind with
my music and I then learnt how to use the music to help other
people enter that state of awareness, with a
calm feeling of relaxation as the result."
"Once you switch off and relax, you're in the process of beginning to meet with your greatest potential. So of course, there is a window for inner-growth and healing and it is something that a growing number of listeners have discovered with my music."
Sam also enjoys collaborating with other creative people. His music has seen him work with several well-respected artists, producing thought-provoking music to align with film projects and artworks.
Sam's style of music originated from his love of nature and of minimalist music and the two intertwine in an often energetic and evocative listening experience. He feels that his music encourages increased levels of mental calm without becoming a glorified sleep-aid, like some traditional relaxation music. His understanding of the unconscious mind really helps him find what he believes to be a niche that helps his listeners easily unwind and remain energised, without,
"endlessly listening to harps and pan-pipes... This music is different. Throughout history music has become too intellectual, too constrained. And it doesn't have to be that way. Think of how tribal music works, African rhythms, the beating drums and how they can be so relaxing. It puts people in a more powerful mental state, because their listening experience becomes unconscious. When they become unconscious, they become linked in with their highest potential and that can mean great or subtle things for each listener."
As well as people who just want to chill out after work, a number of Reiki and Yoga practitioners have begun listening to Sam's music and so Sam is very interested in the postive effects his music has upon listeners:
"My music appeals to people on several different levels. I think it helps people to relax and in turn heal. Clears their mind and so on. When people are drawn to my music in this way, if only for a moment, they find a space for themselves, away from their busy lives."
He uses piano for most of his work, believing it is an
untapped resource, which manages to conjure up his listener's
emotions and visual memories, which he believes is important
when using music to clear the mind and relax.
